I had this app (the free version) on my older device, it worked perfectly! Switched to a new phone and used the auto backup process to set it and now it is all messed up.įirst the app version I had didn’t even open (the only app that failed the auto move process), so I had to delete and reinstall it. But it's really interesting the mind games I have played in the past, where I let myself get distracted in the middle of important tasks by things I "really have to do." Now, when the challenge is on, all of that stuff waits until I've done at least 8 sessions, sometimes as many as 12. I find it funny how I entertain myself with this. And the more sessions I do in a row, the more the challenge is on to do even more sessions. Then it's break time and I say "Screw it-I'm on a roll." So I end up doing anywhere from 4 to 8 sessions in a row, with no breaks except bathroom and pour a cup of coffee. I only use it for tasks that need heavy focus. Here's how it has craftily gotten more work out of me. End result is that I get way more done than before I started using it. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much more focused I am when using it, as it forces me to commit and stay on task. All you need to know can be seen in this Youtube Video. The series is expected to be 10 parts in length and is exclusive to Netflix. In World of Warcraft, Blizzard has paid homage to the film by creating the Arakkoa who dwell mainly in the Terrokar Forest, Outlands.Ī series of the Dark Crystal is currently in production by Henson Studios, who were the original pupeteers for the original film. The team behind the film are more famous for the Muppets and Farscape. Along the way, he is assisted by a female Gefling called Kira.Īll the characters are puppets, there are no humans or computer trickery in the film. The Gefling is Jen who begins the mission by first obtaining the missing shard then journeying to the Tower to join the pieces. According to legend, a Gelfling will repair the Crystal and thus break the Skeksis control over the planet. The convergences of the Suns are due soon and if the Crystal is not repaired, the Skeksis will rule the planet forever. The Mystics, a crouching sloth like creatures retreated from the tower. The Skekis, tall creatures with faces like birds kept control of the tower that house the Crystal. The land around the Crystal turned to wasteland and the urSkeks split into two races, the Mystics and the Skeksis. A small shard of the Crystal broke off and became lost. During the last convergence of the three suns, the urSkeks damaged the Crystal. But for those who live in fear of the Skeksis and the Gelflings, know that you're not alone.A thousand years ago, the planet Thra used to green and the vegetation plentiful but that was before the Crystal was damaged. You're probably going to love the remake. For those who loved the original film, good for you. I don't like the mystery, and the child who misguidedly was allowed to watch the 1982 original will always live in fear of the puppet monsters hiding around any given corner. Netflix's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has the benefit of having recognizable voices and even more enhanced visuals, but I can't get past the fact that this level of puppeteering is essentially just witchcraft for people who own Etsy shops. There's something so incredibly terrifying about it that watching it again 23 years later still makes me want to check under my bed and make sure that a Skeksis isn't hiding under there. Many years ago, alien beings came to the world and made an impression both good and bad. These puppets are too realistic to be fake, but too fake to be real. The original Dark Crystal For a bit of background to those unfamiliar, The Dark Crystal is a story focusing on the world of Thra, which to some might be translated as life and the afterlife, or even the soul of all creatures in the world of the Dark Crystal. If memory serves me correctly, I didn't leave my bed for years after this because I was terrified these monsters lived under it. The voice work sounds menacing across the board, but the real terror comes from the puppets themselves. The Dark Crystal was well beyond its time when it comes to its technical aspects, but the problem here is that this film is just too throughly, terrifyingly '80s. Actually, here's a picture because words can't fully capture it. This is important because at this point, the planet of Thra is currently being ruled by the evil Skeksis, a race of creatures that look a bit like the cast of Dinosaurs, if you put them in the microwave on defrost. To catch you up, Jen, a muppet baby with mouse ears and Carly Rae Jepsen's haircut, is sent out into the world to retrieve a shard of crystal that will restore balance to the universe. The original, branded as a Jim Henson puppet feature, was inappropriately marketed to kids as a children's film. Some parents feel the need to protect their children from the mature nature of violence or sexual content, but heed these words: The real threat is puppets.Īfter Netflix announced a series based on the world of The Dark Crystal, I decided to return to the film because I'd managed to block out that film from my waking memory. That strange criteria is how I was able to sneak by and watch Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal, a 1982 live action puppet film that will haunt the very essence of your being. I was allowed to watch most R-rated films, but not Will & Grace-the world of parental supervision was a Wild West situation in my house. When I was a kid, my parents had very strange rules about what I could and couldn't watch on television. The guard, believing I had hidden somewhere in the office, kept searching for me, leaving his back exposed to the cargo hold below, which I then stabbed. I looped around to the cargo room, over which the office is lofted, and climbed the boxes I had stacked earlier. I quickly scrambled down the chain, and into the secluded hallway below. I managed to catch him off guard, killing him quickly, but was seen by the third, shotgun wielding guard. I managed to quietly stab one of them in the back when he made the mistake of investigating my little corner, then tried to approach the second of the three enemies. The guards rushed the room, shattered the door, and began stumbling around in the dark, looking for me. I flicked a light switch, bathed the room in nearly impenetrable dark, broke the window, and then tucked myself into a secluded corner of the room. The utility shaft, however, provided ample cover and the ability to break line of sight. Climbing onto the roof while being chased by three guards would lead to my being shot in the back, as would hopping down into the open, coverless room below. This secured me an escape route for when things would, almost inevitably, go wrong. On my next attempt, I broke the wooden boards separating the chains from the building’s ground floor and climbed into the office. Those guards had to be protecting something important. The sound of the window alerted three guards, who ran to the locked door, which they then beat down with an axe before shooting me with a shotgun. I wanted easy access to the roof, so I decided to break a window and climb out onto the balcony. For example, I got into the office by stacking boxes and quickly looted the room. The room is connected to every other part of the building, and gaining access through one route doesn’t guarantee being able to use the others. Gloomwood deftly evades this fate by making your approach to the office tactically interesting. This would be novel, for a while, until the artifice of the level design set in. “You can tackle this problem in any way,” the game would remind you, before presenting you with identical outcomes for each approach. In a lesser game, this would be empty player expression for player expression’s sake. The office is connected to the rest of the facility by a locked door connected to the building’s central stairway, a closed window onto the roof, a chain which runs from the ground floor to the office through a boarded up entrance, and a wall which can be climbed by stacking boxes from the other side of the room. In an early part of the first level there is a loft office with a safe, some lore, and a handful of resources. Routes you become intimately familiar with if you, like me, didn’t manage to find a revolver for three hours. The levels are relatively large, with half-a-dozen routes through just about every part of the map. It even uses a similar early 3D aesthetic to the original Thief, which has become something of a signature for New Blood Interactive. Gloomwood’s Thief DNA is obvious guards are hearty and hit hard, you move slowly by default and slower when you mask your footsteps, and the game begins with you finding a ring that indicates how well lit (and vulnerable) you are. One that other developers have been chasing for years. Its clear, light based sneaking mechanics, excellent level design, and distinctive, terrible combat have cemented it in the minds of many as the quintessential stealth game. Gloomwood is expected to launch on Steam Early Access later this year, and you can play the demo right now (opens in new tab). The game, which just entered early access, has been pitched by developers, influencers, and journalists alike as “ Thief with guns.” Since its release in 1997, Thief has been a gold-standard for first-person stealth. I've had high hopes for Gloomwood from the start, and after getting some playtime on this early build, I'm even more excited for what's coming. You can bet there will be rejoicing among old-time Taffers if that happens.ĭespite the rough edges, I was really impressed with what I played. He also hit me with a surprise that Thief fans will love: New Blood is working on getting Stephen Russell, the voice actor behind Garrett and Corvo Attano, involved in the game. The AI is still rough in spots-at one point an alerted guard opened a door to room where I'd left a dead body lying in the open, but he got stuck behind the door and eventually reverted to idle state-and there's no voice acting or guard chatter, although Dave Oshry of publisher New Blood Interactive told me that both are on the way. The Gloomwood demo is still a work in progress. Killing is easy, but hiding under stairs, sneaking behind some barrels, timing a guard's movements by listening to his footsteps, then dashing into a room to snatch a key and slipping out again unseen, is exhilarating. In full stealth mode, though, Gloomwood really does ring the old-school Thief bell. So when a CEO is not only making the strategic decisions but makes themselves visible in terms of driving the change and getting staff to buy in to new systems it can go a long way to streamlining the process. It is easier for people to trust someone they actually know. If he has hand-picked those people for key positions, it makes for a much stronger executive team. When a CEO can trust his co-leaders and know they’ll make decisions with the company vision and goals in mind, delegation becomes easier.
